Are you feeling overwhelmed and undervalued at work?

I have recently had clients come to me who are feeling overwhelmed and undervalued at work.

Instead of doing something about it they just kept on going and working even harder because they thought that they were the problem and not the workplace. This led to them having a very low self-esteem and eventually resulted in a burnout.

If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed and undervalued at work, know that you’re not alone. The modern workplace can be demanding, and it’s easy to become swamped with responsibilities and to feel like your efforts go unnoticed.

Are you still on the fence about remote work, secretly convinced that your direct reports, colleagues and even your boss are faffing about at home, getting in a workout or even off on a cheeky unofficial holiday while still on the clock? Or maybe it’s you who’s feeling the pressure to stuff your calendar full of meetings, maintain a neverending to-do list and constantly remind your manager how busy you are.

From quiet quitting to coffee-badging and quiet vacationing, this year’s work trends popularised by TikTok have become misunderstood to stereotype Gen Z workers as lazy, entitled or stubbornly unwilling to work hard. And the newest term to describe modern workers echoes the same misconception.

It’s called fauxductivity.

What is faux- ductivity?

Fauxductivity means fake productivity, referring to workers who feign or exaggerate how much work they’re getting done during the workday, without actually contributing value.

As a career coach, I help my clients work through these feelings and determine what they want instead in their career.

I have summed up some strategies that I recommend for overcoming the sense of being overwhelmed and undervalued.

🌟 Fill up your own cup and make self-care a priority: Start by taking care of yourself both physically and mentally. When you're overwhelmed, it's important to find ways to recharge for example by going to the gym or starting a yoga practice. Also make your metal health a priority. Seek out help and talk to a professional about all your mindset wobbles. Focusing on personal well-being can lead to a renewed sense of purpose and confidence in your professional life.

💬 Open up and voice what you are feeling. Communication is key. Talk to your supervisor about your workload and feelings of being undervalued. They might not be aware of what you're going through. If they don’t appreciate you being open, honest, and vulnerable, you might need to reconsider your workplace all together.

🚀 Realign Goals: Reflect on your career goals and where you see yourself heading. Sometimes, the feeling of undervaluation can be a sign that it's time for a new direction.

🙌 Seek Support: Speak to a mentor, colleague, or a career coach who can offer guidance and advice during challenging times and provide a fresh perspective on your situation.

📚 Continuous Learning: Invest in your professional development to stay ahead of the curve. Sometimes, learning new skills can reignite your passion for your work.

💡 Self-Recognition: Don’t let your worth be determined by external validation. Be proud of your accomplishments and make it visible what value you bring to your team and the company you work for.

I believe that acknowledging and addressing feelings of being undervalued is a crucial step toward creating a more fulfilling and satisfying work experience.
